Hip Hop Producers Selling Instrumentals - A Broad Overview
Traditionally, or back in the early days of hip hop, hip hop music producers and beat smiths sold Hip hop instrumentals just to make ends meat. But today, you have producers such as The Neptunes, whom sold Rapper Nas a single Hip Hop instrumental for $1,000,000 dollars. How did this happen? How can rappers afford to pay so much for a single instrumental track?
Unfortunately not everybody can sell Hip hop instrumentals for as much as the Neptunes. Selling Hip hop instrumentals at low prices like $100 dollars is the harsh reality for many up and coming hip hop producers. Selling instrumentals online can be even more difficult, it’s not uncommon to see new producers selling decent instrumentals for under $75 dollars.
Many rappers see this as an opportunity to get into the rap game quickly. Acquire some instrumentals, record an album, and hope to get discovered. The problem here is that paying less for a bad beat is not always the best idea. Famous rappers know that buying good instrumentals is like making a smart investment to help insure a successful career in the music industry. Of course, most of these big shot rap artists also have big label backing, which makes paying a couple grand for an instrumental beat not a big problem.
When it comes to hip hop producers selling their instrumentals, the competition is now more than ever. However, at the same time there is also a very large demand for new hip hop instrumentals. Hip hop music is a world wide super power, topping off most of the popular music charts.
With the advent of new hip hop software which makes it increasingly easy to make your own instrumentals, more and more people want to take a shot at producing hip hop music. People often hear a song and due to its apparent simplicity think, I can do that. In some cases they can do it, but most of the time they will fail and realize that it was actually a little more difficult than they first predicted. Just laying down the instrumental on software is one thing, selling it to somebody is whole different ball game.
Selling the music becomes a game of connections. The Neptunes have connections, they have reputation and they have extremely unique beats. This allows them to ask for such high prices, they are almost like a guarantee for a hit song. And when a rapper makes a hit song, they make bank. Back in the old days when rappers made less, the producers who made the music also made less.
Selling instrumentals is nothing more than supply and demand. The supply of good hip hop music these days is small, increasing the demand dramatically. The supply of really bad hip hop instrumentals is incredible, they are everywhere and nobody wants them. Setting yourself aside from the pack is the only way to be successful in the hip hop music industry.
So the moral of the story? No moral at all, just trying to sell my beats so that I can survive, and maybe make $1,000,000.
