you cant use protools without the proper hardware. google presonus studio one, ableton live, fl studio. there are trial versions for those.

slippers.... a furry hat..... a scarf can even be pretty soft wear... hahaha!
but seriously- theres lots of free trials for stuff - or get http://www.utorrent.com/ and visit http://www.proaudiotorrents.org/ - this is gonna make me sound like a geek, but if you're serious I advise buying retail for the software you end up using - I dont think its worth risking badly cracked software crashing - or total lack of support for all your music that you spend so much time and effort on. I used cracked software for years and the most annoying thing was having to find cracked updates to fix known issues. When you decide on the right software you'll probably use it for a long long time, so its a good investment.
trying plugins on torrents is very useful to avoid spending 1000s - but yeh dont forget if you plan to be professional - renting out your studio, then cracked stuff can be a very bad idea. "sorry we need to redo part of your track - er i'm using cracked software and it crashed"

how much do you have to spend?
people will advise you all sorts of things - but really if u dont have the cash to spend a little or at least 5 years to learn engineering, you're better off concentrating on your artistic vibe -- if you really wanna have good sounding stuff then go to a studio and use your home setup to sketch ideas --- unless you learn engineering then your home setup will never compete with major acts, you'll just be spending money on making slightly better but still obviously homemade stuff.
however if you are intent on sticking to home recording..... A good mic is no use without a good preamp - a good preamp is no good without good convertors to record to your computer - all of it is pretty pointless without monitors and room treatment so you can hear what is actually going on.
probably the most useful all round things you could get is a decent soundcard - that will improve your recording channels, you output and latency. Also if you want a new mic studio mic with xlr and possibly needing phantom power - you really want the soundcard for it first.
a new mic alone wont make stuff sound good. Think of the cost of a mic used by you with no engineering --- and compare it with waiting till you have an excellent complete song and hiring a studio with amazing mics & experienced engineers for a very short time to record it.
having said all this....
if u want a good cheap studio mic - look at audio technica 2020 & 4040..... but without engineering, preamps and room treatment etc you probably better with a dynamic mic not a condensor --- the sm58 is an industry standard dynamic for many things ---- im suggesting these mics because you could keep them forever - they are cheap but found in lots of top studios. theres lots of budget mics with things like usb connections - but they have a limited use if you get round to upgrading your soundcard etc
yeh sorry to go on but you caught me on a studio break!!
