Wrong. Mainstream Hip-Hop sucks.
Underground lyricism is amazing.

the way you see rap music is how i usually tend to see rock and metal music, it doesnt speak for me because it seems to me that rock music may have metaphors and hidden lines but they can be interpreted in very different ways as some rock songs ive heard have very sparse lyrics.

This is how i see it.....
Rock music is generally rubbish and over analysed by a bunch of jumped up coke heads to mean something more than what it really is. I think anyone can join a group of words together and then say it has a deeper meaning when it really doesnt

I am the complete opposite of you progrocker but i am better cuz im a HIP HOP FAN lol

Man music any genre can be crap, I play guitar/drums/bass and i listen to the radio and laugh my ass off, I dont believe for a second that these guys are playing for the love of music, theres simply a profit to me made. Hip hops the same thing, soulja boy or jeezy come on and I laugh equally as hard, its all about the reason you play/rap in the first place, there are artists and then there are opportunists

But I'm not a redneck thats for sure. I live in Massachusetts, think country music is just about the worst shit around, and every black person I have ever met is the coolest person I know.

I looked up the roots and was unimpressed. They have terribly boring drum beats, as well as very simplistic guitar riffs, and all of that boring music is overpowered by the "vocals." Kanye has better instrumentals then that. Home coming has a nice little piano riff, but he "sings" to much. He has a big mouth, just like every rapper.

Every song has a 4/4 time measurment with a highly overused drum beat, and maybe a little synth track. No off beats or notes are placed in interesting thoughtful positions in the songs. I just want to understand what keeps you guys interested.

Ugh the worst is the bass. I'm a bass player and I shudder everytime some dude rolls by with the bass up as loud as it can possible be despite the fact that the song he is playing only has one bass note and thats not even created by a bass guitar. and it is such a boring rythmic pattern

Quarter note, eigth note, eigth note, eigth note, eigth note, quarter note...
yeah dawg but u CANT say dat a genre is not a muzik only cuz is different from other types of music's genres.
Cuz u think that music might have a lot of notes n aint gotta be maked by computer or sumtin like dat but...u're not right, cuz is music, n stop.
Or i can say dat death metal is not music cuz they only scream loud on sum noisy music... i dont like death metal, but i know dat is music...no doubt...

Just gonna chuck in my two pence, since I like rock and metal too...

Most rap is music. When you use sound to stimulate emotion and thought, that's art, that's music righ there. If you just rap about shit with no meaning like most mainstream cats, most pop acts and some mainstream rock (as well as some death/black metal where it's all formulaic to fit in with some predefined image and notion of what you should be), then you fail to make music. You are making porn, propaganda or a business venture with no real artistic value or creativity and paying no mind to the consequences of whatever message or glamorisation is contained within (i.e. 'gangsta' culture)

I'd take something imaginative and thought provoking in any genre over something so plain that draws on image as the sole appealing factor. This can be with rap (blah blah, do drugs... shot up your block... fucked some bitches) or rock (fuck you, i wanna kill you... im gonna get you between the sheets [hey Cute Is What We Aim For, FUCK OFF]... Anything encouraging hatred or elitism).

No sense arguing or debating with the OP. Everyone has their own reasons for liking certain genres of music. Its all personal preference. His "opinion" is his alone. My only issue is the point of this thread. Does he seriously saying these things for a debate or just to start a flame war? Im new to this forum but i know other forums have rules about flaming and trolling.

Arrow What is "real" music?

That's what makes rap so different. If you know the roots of rap and hiphop then you know that there were never any beats or instruments behind the lyrics when it first started out. It started out as a form of poetry, not music. Rap was about rhyming true stories about life. But since the early days of rap the industry has (for the most part) butchered the meaning of rap.

I guess you're right that it's not "real" music.... of course everybody has their own opinion as to what "real" music is. It wasn't even meant to be music in the first place. It was meant to be poetry with rhythm, or acapella. But the evolution of hiphop has altered it completely, at least for most people.

But if you're looking for exciting, complex, and dynamic instrumentals then rap probably isn't for you. For the rappers who stay true to the art, it is all about stories, lyrics, and rhythm,
