nice full bass and lo -end....overall very full sound - like the horns - like the spacey keys sound - subby bass sounds nice - hard to tell if it works with the kick on this quality of mp3 - sounds far too compressed for my taste though. Dynamics dont exist here - its a constant level and doesnt really drop anywhere. Its very full sounding but seems you sacrificied a lot of feel for loudness - a lot of people do this - the charts is full of it - personally i think its a bit lazy.
very authentic sounding old skool rapping style - its cool - lyrics dont blow me away - but its kind of the point of a lot of old skool - enjoy the flows but dont overanalyse.
This "sounds like a hiphop tune" - the production and writing of the beat is very tight and polished - nice loop, fitting drums etc(could maybe do with an intro or switch somewhere) the compression on the final beat though is far too much for my ears - i want more space so i appreciate the sounds more.
The rapping is ok (swear the 2nd mc sounds like MF doom!)- didnt blow me away or anything - its very old skool - what i like about this old skool thing is the lack of ego from the MCs - its more about the whole tune than nowadays.... but kids seem to love ego now...maybe kind of a niche market now...?

ok i chose the first tune - addicted to fame

first thing that hits me is the kick drum - its very big and reverbed very obviously - not a very "hiphop" sound - lacks tightness. The kit doesnt fit together well IMO - i wanna hear the snare snap louder than the loudest hat.
theres a lot of mud in the bass - probably cos of the kick spreading across the whole lo-end.
guitar is nice - the keys backing it up sound very synthy and not really blended very well - i would like to hear them mixed almost like they were recorded in the same room as the guitar.
for me this is really let down by the mixing - a bit of clarity on this beat and it could be really nice. The vocal mixing is really unexciting - dull almost

MC - not really hear Irish accent in hiphop - its cool - performance is lacking heavily tho - no tonal dynamics at all - a lot of MCs stick to their signature tone, but if they do its usually perfected and is actually not their talking voice tone, but a purposeful performance tone - almost like singing. The lack of performance here means a lack of projection - takes away from the power of lyrics etc.

interesting intro - original..... drums i kind of expected to drop heavy and double time to contrast the floaty sample..anyway...

very minimal tune - the drums are ok - because its so minimal I would like to hear maybe more full drums - more mids overall and lows on the snare. snare esp. sounds a little cheap.
main issue here for me is the vocal mixing - its too loud - too spread - needs the basic centre signal to be dominant - esp. cos theres very little to the beat in the verses. Could be really held back. Even if there was a more full beat, the mixing level of the vocals is too loud.

mixing levels mess this up for me - the sparse chords could be MUCH louder - give the track some depth - but its impossible to tell cos the vocal is so overpowering.

Mc seems to understand "performance" but needs polishing - sentiment is a bit unclear - is he joking? being serious? sems to blend into one.

I think a LOT could have been made of the unlikely hiphop sample and wasnt -chance missed IMO

lyrical excersize-
immediate reaction is that this is a very nice sound - very pro...

microscope ears...... - the snare is too loud - very slightly - but IMO a tiny bit lower and the kick would come through a bit more giving better balance on the drums - when the snare starts rolling it really sticks out and kind of spoils the balance of the tune. I think there is an annoying hi frequency that could be tamed on the snare as well - or could be reverbing to the stereo space...?
Kick is nice - i wanna hear it a bit more.
subby kick drum is cool - makes up for no bassline - personally i think a very sparse sine wave bass line could work also.... help ground the beat a bit - maybe the snare would sound ok with an opposing balancing frequency.

the vocal is recorded ok - maybe needs a bit of eqing - a tiny bit boomy - maybe some midrange eq could give it a bit of sharpness - it ALMOST sounds too loud - if the mids came out a little more it could even been turned down and still have more prescence.

confident performance - not particularly original, but good.

one thing about this beat - it sounds great at low levels - when u start pumping it the issues come out - particularly the lack of clarity in the very top end - IMO caused by the snare. Almost sounds a little distorted right at the top at times - the keys could have more space for themselves - and that trippy sound could be really quiet but cutting -it just gets a bit overpowered by the snare

fittin in:

overall mix is very muted - lot of bass - disproportinately quiet hi-end - and almost non existent mid range.

bass sounds nice - the guitar sample could be much louder and take out some bottom from it.

vocal sounds a bit "back" in the mix - sounds like the sound might be ok - just too quiet and forced back in the mix - 2nd mc sounds MUCH better - sharp and crisp - helps counteract the muted sound of the track.

quite like this in a lot of ways - just wanna hear the drums A LOT more punchy not so reverbed. Vocal needs to be more upfront.

bit of a rubbish review sorry - not the most exciting track - no breaks or suprises really - i feel the mix is like i say too muted and the 1st MC gets lost in it.

i like the subby bass with the guitar - dont think the idea has been fully exploited.

explosion:

whoa - wasnt expecting that..... ok its sitting a little bit more now and im used to it - not bad

first synth is a really nice sound - full, crisp nice mix, has its own place...... then everything else comes and spoils it - the drum breaks cutting every couple of bars sound a little bit off - maybe timing, maybe just need a bit more blending soundwise.

"brave" track in a way - dont think its entirely pulled off - think u need an ultra clean mix for this sort of thing - the synths especially are very big and need their own space - when it drops its very messy.

The vocal is loud - prob needs some nice compression and a bit of eq in the mid-range..... i like the way u sound tho - it fits the track.


lots of good ideas here - maybe fails in execution - good to hear something different.


just checked poetics - mix is very poor - mic too loud etc - but im gonna ignore that - something i really like about your MCing - not really listening to the lyrics - you got a lot of energy - really likable - wanting to hear more better mixed

oh yes man explosion is not done justice sonically on the youtube video because of the terrible compression process a song endures when going from garageband to itunes to quicktime and finally to youtube. Alot of the sound is sacrificed. Yes as you know poetics is bad sonically. It's not the last cut. It was just something I threw up on the page to give people a peek into what I was working on. and trying to edit in imovie is a niiigghtmare. So the album version will be more crisp by about 86.5%. thanks man I appreciate it criticism makes me better. you should subscribe and stay tuned man.

like i said - really like the style - feels original(ish)... refreshing - and most importantly, you're confident with it.

would like to her better versions - i get what youre saying about the compression to mp3, but i think the initial leveling is off.... you got someone to mix you?

drums are (IMO) perfect on this tune... the intro drums r very nice and punchy.... then they go and i want them back but the 2nd kit is even better.... Love the horn spread... leaves a lot of space for vox - and those drums!!!!!!

ok.... hook sounds a bit disappointing..... but its already building on me - maybe the straight drop down to it is a bit sudden/ hard to accept... also the drop back into the verse sounds odd..... its almost like its a great hook but from a different tune.... could work just needs something - maybe a sound to merge the verse horns out...... or a couple of cut up horn stabs put into the verse.

getting to the end - noticing lack of arrangement/bridges/breaks.... doesnt matter too much cos the loop is good, but could get unsuprising on multiple listens......

Love the production here - the horns could be experimented with even more - i like where they are in the stereo image - could even have a little more harshness mid and top end - keep them totally away from the bass prehaps?

bass line is a bit boring - could jump or off the kicks IMO - sounds good in th hook tho ----- 2nd listen now - im a bit more used to this odd hook switch - still just sounds a bit "wrong"..... maybe some MCing along with the hook sample? or a sound to merge hook and verse like i said before...now im thinking i wanna just hear a long sustained horn note like from the verse, but not a melody.

3rd listen.... the vocals are again really really on point, excellent performance, entertaining, listenable etc etc.... but they are not 100% there in terms of mixing or maybe its the overall mastering..... your last track i thought was over compressed - this could maybe do with a bit more - sounds a bit loose when u start playing loud - but coulkd just be a bit of level adjusting too.....

one of the best tracks i have heard in a while, signed or unsigned.... that hook still gets to me 4th time round, but i dont really care - kind of stops it from being totally commercial - even tho its a commercial hook in a way and the verse is too.... just maybe asking a bit much from the listener.
